Every year, Knob Creek Gun Range hosts a bi-annual event called the Machine Gun Shoot during the second weekend of April and October. The participants are machine gun dealers, collectors and enthusiasts from all over the country. The Machine Gun Shoot itself consists of three days of machine gun shooting, dealer displays, shooting competitions and a spectacular Saturday Night Shoot. The machine gunners are shooting at a wide variety of used appliances, abandoned vehicles, and barrels of fuel with pyrotechnic charges attached.
Saturday was date night, so that’s where my boyfriend and I ended up and it was a blast (no pun intended). I’ve heard about the event for years and have always wanted to go and since he’s stationed at Fort Knox, we were already right down the road from it.
Before the shooting started, we walked through and looked at all of the vendors. They were selling everything from tiny gun parts to full size weapons, including a booth that was selling RPG’s and another that was selling fully operational cannons. It was fascinating. Just the people watching was enough to keep me entertained.
For anyone planning on ever attending, get there early and snag a good seat because it gets crowded fast when the show is about to start. I had to get up on his shoulders just to be able to see, luckily he’s 6’5″ and could see above the crowd.
The picture above doesn’t even do the event any justice, it was so much better to actually watch the show. 50+ shooters lined up to fire downrange at all kinds of random junk, some rigged to explode. We could feel the heat from the blast and they weren’t wimpy, they were big mushroom clouds of fire and smoke.
Overall it was an incredible experience and is very family friendly. They have some old WWI & WWII tanks on display that the kids and climb on and get inside. The next Machine Gun Shoot will be October 13, 14, & 15th.
